LATEST HEALTH NEWS

In 2016-2017 the primary focus was working with the Animal Health Trust (AHT) and the Kennel Club (KC) on bringing forward a new DNA test for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) and Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG).

POAG/PLL is a painful and blinding inherited eye condition associated with high pressure inside the eye. In POAG/PLL glaucoma results from reduced drainage of fluid from the eye. This causes a build-up of pressure which, in turn leads to pain and blindness.  The eyes become enlarged and the lens of the eye becomes wobbly or even falls completely out of its normal position. Most dogs become affected at approximately 4-6 years of age. (Animal Health Trust).

The DNA test was launched at the end of February 2017 at a health day for the breed, and test kits were available and subsidised by the club.  In the first four months of testing, 159 Shar Pei from 10 different countries have been tested with 21 dogs giving an affected result, 62 testing as carriers and 82 dogs clear.

The AHT recommended that carriers be bred to clear dogs and that puppies be tested if they are to be used for breeding. For further information here are some useful links;
